# What is burning?

Burning is an instruction that closes token accounts, and reclaims the small storage fee needed.\
\
By burning slugs you can gain certain roles and benefits. Burning is a large part of slug culture - from many of our utilities, to the Incinerator.\
\
It will continue to play a large role in the project going forward.\
\
In fact, burning is so competitive, multiple people have burned over 100 slugs, and some have burned over 300.\
\
As of February, 2023: 3,979 have been burned.
